First of all it is often said that the Judge is so far removed from the offenders world that they could never truly understand their world, although they have the power to sentence them.
In this case, the judge, being an ex-addict, can allow the offender to think in a different way.
Most importantly, it can show the client that if they turn their life around, anything is possible.
If you have a problematic relationship with substances, it will get in the way of your potential. Problematic substance use and potential do not go together. They are like oil and water.
If you are using substances problematically, their is always hope to overcome this obstacle. Remember, drug use is not who you are, it is what you do.
